Beyond the Medicine Cabinet: a Look at Alternative Therapies
15 June 2009The purpose of aromatherapy is to boost our physical and mental well-being via essential oils and plant oils. Aromatherapy has been used for thousands of years to improve health. 90 volatile oils have been discovered and are in use today.Aromatherapy isn’t only about essential oils though - you can also admit under the phrase aromatherapy: sea salts, sugars, jojoba (a liquid wax), hydrosols, herbs etc.
In more detail, what are the health benefits? It seems incredible that merely from smelling a substance or placing it on my skin, I can improve my well-being. Here’s the science bit : The aroma of the natural volatile oil stirs the brain to spark off a chemical reaction, and when breathed into the lungs, the natural elements can provide a health boost. Because volatile oils are so powerful and concentrated, they should never be placed on to skin in their undiluted form. To spread essential oils to skin, they are usually diluted into a carrier like a vegetable oil, also known as a carrier oil. Common carrier oils are sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil and grapeseed oil.
So where can I get aromatherapy items, and what should I look out for? A basic rule is to be suspicious of products that do not name their ingredients and also those that don’t use pure essential oils. Looking on the web, there’s an abundance of aromatherapy vendors, and you can purchase all kinds of things…..from Jasmine Shampoos to bath crystals.
We hope the dear reader will learn more in regards to aromatherapy as it is a super boost to ones well-being, and it can be applied almost anywhere, and does not come with any great time or monetary tolls.
